‘92 Subaru Liberty

Adrian and Elliot’s 1992 Subaru Liberty LX rally car was bought and built for local West Australian autocross, khanacross, motorkhana and other speed events – especially with gravel in mind. A new car was needed after Adrian’s AE82 Toyota Corolla died a death in the heat of autocross competition. A Subaru had been on the cards for a while, but it had to be done well but also cheaply. Not your typical gravel khanacross and autocross car chosen in Western Australia, but in fact a good choice. Typically 4WD cars are not permitted in events or don’t count for awards, and entering a FWD Subaru has caused confusion on the entry-list of more than one event. And although a much heavier car than most 2WD’s entered the balance and handling of the Liberty, especially because of the availability of so many interchangeable newer parts from the Subaru line-up (like 2004 STi Spec-C Impreza suspension), it has been competitive and a joy to drive.
